Warning signs

7km

It's a distance I cover easily and this mornings' pace was as Zone 2 (60-70% of max heart-rate) as can be.

What's the problem?

Well, that niggling shin I mentioned in the post this morning may be more than a niggle.

I've been training with the knowledge that I've done this before and can handle the distance, ramp up, fatigue etc. I made it through the first few weeks feeling a little tired but motivated.

I noted a few aches as I got my routine going again and while most was fairly normal reactions to my body adjusting, the shins were new.

Both shins felt a bit sore for a couple of runs on the go, regardless of distance or effort. The left shin was more painful towards the inside-top and that was a pain that went away a few weeks ago, nice.

The right shin, however, was a little more stubborn and I noticed the pain more and seemingly "move down" to just below the middle of my shin. Worse the pain would continue after running and for a decent while after ~1hour or so.

Warning signs

My 7km this morning was quite enjoyable, the weather is nice, podcasts were good to go and I'd even had a Chai Guys pastry for breakfast. Almost immediately I felt pain in my right shin, I ran through it and at times barely noticed it however after I finished my run and started walking I noticed a sharp pain in one spot.

This wasn't going away.

You might say I should have listened to my body sooner, and I certainly did skip a few runs when I wasn't feeling 100%. This new, however feels more acute.

Next steps

Stop running 🚫🏃‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃

The target is the Chester marathon in October. The goal hasn't changed but I do need to check in with a physio and see if it's feasible.

In the meantime I'll get my bike setup and in a week or so visit the pool more regularly. I need to keep everything ticking over on the off chance I can get the all clear.

What a journey; 3 weeks ago I ran 21.2 in 1:46, I felt great and was actually looking forward to the ramp up.

There's hope yet.
