Taking it slow
14 Aug 2025 · 📖 in 2 minutes We're still running and logging 📝My session with a physio went well - she doesn't think I have a stress fracture so that's good.
Shin Splints
This is my first ever bout of shin splints and honestly they suck.
In the past I've always had a decent ramp up time into training blocks. I don't think I did much more differently apart from earlier in the year (after a long hiatus) I decided I could run 12km home from work. While I found this OK, I knew I wasn't in the best of shape and I was also still climbing.
I suspect a combination of factors go into this but here we are.
Turns out that Shin splints are a stress injury that can eventually lead to fractures. Given I've ramped up in my training recently it's maybe not the most unexpected thing.
Now I know what's in front of me, how do I solve it?
Treatment
Like most bone-related issues the best medicine is time.
I have a few exercises that I do as part of my physio and I've been encouraged to keep on the bike, yoga and swimming. The end result of this is maybe a 2 week delay in my running plan.
One thing I have noticed is that Runna doesn't seem to have an obvious "I have an injury, please adjust my play" button which would be super useful as I'm not sure I have the time now to complete a full ramp up.
Taking it slow
I ran one, slow, 5k this week and It doesn't feel great given was I around 40km (still waaay off from where I felt I needed to be).
However, I have to trust the process and the only way that happens is if don't run fast or far. I have been enjoying the bike though.
I'll jog down to the park for a workout tomorrow and we'll see how that feels.
